Henri Bendel comes to Los Angeles

Monday, August 31st, 2009

henri_bendel_los-angelesI had mixed emotions upon hearing that Bendel’s was coming to Los Angeles, at first a giddy rush of excitement swept over me, then I found out it would be coming to the Beverly Center. Excitement gave way to confusion and a pit of anxiety began to form as it dawned on me… this was probably not going to be a full service Henri Bendel store, this I feared would be another one of their gift boutiques. This same Henri Bendel mirage lured me out of Miami on a recent visit, to far away Aventura and when I finally saw the Henri Bendel store front from a distance I rushed to meet it with all the glee of a wife seeing her husband come back from World War II, only to find that it wasn’t a real Bendel’s store. It was just a store trying to sell me the stuff I buy when I can’t afford to buy the stuff the real Bendel’s store sells. In the end I bought a Ben-doll keychain and left a little disappointed, while still relishing my brown striped bag.

After reading more on Racked LA and piecing the other dribs and drabs about the opening together, it has become disappointingly apparent that this will be an HB gift boutique, which is a strange concept to me. I don’t much see the point in buying the gift items in the absence of the experience of the real store. I will go there nonetheless, and I will probably get a keychain and a candle or two. But it’s like showing up to see the Nutcracker Ballet only to find out that you just bought a copy of the program, what’s a souvenir without the experience?

Purikura

Purikura

One of my favorite pastimes in Tokyo is definitely their Purikura booths. It has all the makings of a great afternoon-photography, cuteness, instant gratification in the form of sticker sheets and lots and lots of pink. I love the premise: get in, take a bunch of goofball photos and then race against the clock to cram as many bows and smiley-faced hamburgers into each frame as humanly possible. The downside? It’s an 11 hour plane ride from Los Angeles.

But a recent discovery on Yelp, pointed me to Photosticker in nearby Garden Grove. SCORE! I will be heading out to investigate in the weeks to come and I will report back.

Calvin Harris

calvin-harrisLately Calvin Harris has been to my ears what Marc Jacobs is to my eyes. I only need hear a few notes from the speakers  and my ears instantly perk up, I tap my foot, and by the time I have a moment to exposé my windows I realize it’s him- Calvin, winning me over once more. His new album Ready for the Weekend is out now. You can hear loads more over at Hype Machine.

solange azagury partridgeIn her website’s bio Solange states, “There comes a day in every woman’s life when she wakes up wanting diamonds.” How true, how very, very true. I experienced that day myself when I went from a girl that wore no jewelry at all, to a lady with a lust for diamonds. It was unexpected, but here we are. I love Solange’s sense of humor and her big statement rings. My all time favorite being her V&A collaboration Hot Lips.

Excuse Me, I think you’ve got some GOOP on your shoe.

Oh Gwyneth Paltrow, your blog amuses me so. It is often the subject of delight and derision around the office. Your “wisdom,” your “effortless style,” your “sage advice”- it’s all so quaint. So when my dear pal pointed me to this article in the September Issue of Vanity Fair, I couldn’t resist. It is a pitch perfect send up of her blog GOOP. Please enjoy! Stick It!

istics_walldecalsWhile visiting one of my favorito blogs, Print & Pattern, I found these adorable wall decals. They have the usual suspects: cute foods making cute faces, but they also have some offbeat selections like the drinking rabbit, some more handdrawn illustrative style offerings and my favorite, the urgent sounding “Baby is here now!”  The catch? They’re based in Korea, can someone import these please? See more at Itstics.com

Manicure-a-holic

manicure_moon-manicure_reverse-french_nail-foilThe first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem- I’m addicted to nail art. It started innocently enough with $5.00 airbrushing at the local manicure shop, it has since escalated to gel manicures, Minx manicures and my next venture- a full on Calgel manicure complete with rhinestones, bows and glitter.

I own an arsenal of nail art and manicure accoutrements, every color polish, lace appliques, real flowers, every cuticle treatment west of the Missippi and about 6 pairs of cuticle nippers which I get professionally sharpened. I know- it’s sick, but I don’t want to be better! And by the looks of this awesome article in Instyle about DIY fancy manicures, my illness is socially acceptable! Gotta run, gonna go buy some nail foil and get to work!

Major Lazer – “Hold The Line” ft. Mr. Lexx and Santigold from Downtown Music on Vimeo.

Anything with lasers in the title is worth a gander, and Major Lazer is definitely proof of that. Their twisted brand of reggae beats and off-the-wall visuals is at once bewildering and intoxicating. Check these crazy fools out on YouTube: “Hold The Line” Feat. Mr. Lexx and Santigold.

After my Brand Report on JCPenney’s I Heart Ronson line, I stumbled on to this amazing editorial by Cintra Wilson of the New York Times.  Worth a read.

Fashion Blogger Conference

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Having trouble figuring out the next trend in ironic eyewear? Fear no more! A fashion blogging conference called Weardrobe will be held in New York City September 4-7. Put your layering fears aside, this panel of seasoned (ish) fashionistas will unlock the mysteries of the sartorial world. In all seriousness, I’m truly impressed by how sophisticated some of these youngsters are; and in some cases, as in the case of precocious pre-teen blogger Style Rookie- I’m downright incredulous. I’m convinced this is a genius conceptual fine art project, and if it’s not-be afraid, this child genius will employ all of us in the near future.
